Vijay Varma was born on 29 March 1986 in a Marwari Hindu family settled in Hyderabad, Telangana. He studied at the FTII.

Varma began his career as an actor in Hyderabad, his homeland, as a theater performer. Before deciding to relocate to Pune for two years to attend FTII for a formal acting instruction, he performed in a number of plays. Upon completing his postgraduate studies, he relocated to Mumbai in pursuit of acting opportunities. His debut acting role was in the critically acclaimed short film Shor, directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK. The film received the Best Short Film prize at the MIAAC festival in New York that same year. In addition, he contributed to the highly regarded film Pink.
