Stree, Tummbad to Munjya, films inspired by Indian folklore

Films based on Indian superstitions and folklore are popular among the audience. Horror-comedies are clear winners at the box office. In the past few years, this genre has picked momentum and filmmakers have gained confidence in telling exciting and thrilling stories from the interiors of the country. Bollywood has tapped into this sentiment of fear of the supernatural and explored the concept like never before.

From Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor's Stree to Sohum Shah's Tumbbad and the upcoming film Munjya, these desi stories inspired by Indian folklore are not to be missed. For the unversed, Munjya starring Mona Singh, Sharvari and Abhay Verma is set to release in theatres on June 7. Here's looking at some thrillers to watch!

Stree

Based on the popular Nale Ba phenomena that took place in Karnataka several years ago, Stree starring Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana and Abhishek  Banerjee was a critical and commercial success.

Tumbbad

Tumbbad, directed by Rahee Anil Barve, was a path-breaking film revolving around concepts such as greed. Thrilling with the right amount of gore, the film starring Sohum Shah holds a cult status in the history of Indian cinema.

Bulbbul

Set in the 1880s Bengal presidency, Bulbbul was not the regular horror story that comes with a predictable plotline. Owned by women and channeling the inner demon when the situation arises, Triptii Dimri was a delight.

Kantara

Rishab Shetty's blockbuster multilingual film, Kantara, takes a dip into the tradition of Bhoota Kola, a folk dance performed primarily in coastal Karnataka. The film is getting a sequel and the filming has kickstarted.

Munjya

Munjya, starring Sharvari, Mona Singh and Abhay Verma, revolves around India's first CGI actor, Munjya who deals with the obsession of love, stitched in a horror story based on folklore. It will release on June 7.
