As a director, screenwriter, producer, costume designer, actor, and television personality, Karan Johar is one of the most captivating figures in Indian cinema. Called `KJo informally, Karan is the son of celebrated producers Yash and Hiroo Johar. Karan made his directing debut with the popular film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai in 1998. Since then, he has directed a number of successful films. In addition to directing films, Karan has produced a number of successful motion pictures through Dharma Productions.

Karan Birth Date and Family Background:

On May 25, 1972, in Bombay, India, Johar was born into a Hindu household. His parents were Hiroo Johar, a Sindhi woman, and Yash Johar, a Punjabi film producer and the founder of Dharma Productions. Karan completed his schooling from the Greenlawns High School. He later attended the H.R. College of Commerce and Economics.

Karan Movie Career (as Director):

Playing the part of Shrikant in the 1989 Doordarshan serial Indradhanush, Johar began his career in the entertainment world. He says that commercial Indian film impacted him as a child and that actors like Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, and Sooraj Barjatya were his idols.

Karan made his directorial debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol and Rani Mukerji, was a blockbuster hit. In October 2012, Karan broke with his usual practice of casting well-known actors in his film Student Of The Year, casting three debutantes: Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, and Alia Bhatt. Johar's next directorial venture was the musical romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).

Johar teamed up again with Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, and Dibakar Banerjee for Lust Stories (2018), an anthology film released on Netflix that served as a follow-up to Bombay Talkies. The film was praised for its exploration of female sexuality, a subject rarely dealt with in Indian films. He then directed and produced Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani (2023) starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in the lead.

Karan as Producer:

Karan has produced several hit movies like Kal Ho Na Ho (2003), Dostana (2008), Agneepath (2012), 2 States (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), Dear Zindagi (2017), Raazi (2018), Dhadak (2018), Student of the Year 2 (2018), Simmba (2018), Shershaah (2022), Gehraiyaan (2022), Jugjugg Jeeyo (2022), Liger (2022), Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva (2022), Yodha (2022) and Bedhadak (2023).

Karan as an Actor:

In 1995, Karan Johar made his screen debut in a small role in Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dhulania Le Jayenge. After that, he made brief cameo appearances in films including Luck By Chance (2009), Om Shanti Om (2007), and Fashion (2008). Nonetheless, he made his feature film debut as an antagonist in Bombay Velvet (2015), directed by Anurag Kashyap.

Karan Television Career:

Karan renowned for hosting Koffee with Karan, the well-liked chat show featuring celebrities that has successfully produced more than 90 episodes. Additionally, he has served as a judge on the reality television programs India's Got Talent and Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. In January 2022, he appeared as a judge on the Colors TV's show Hunarbaaz: Desh Ki Shaan along with Mithun Chakraborty and Parineeti Chopra.

Karan Personal Life:

In March 2017, Karan Johar became the father of the twins, Yash and Roohi, via surrogacy.
