Exclusive: Kill ‘Nikat’ song Lyricist Siddhant Kaushal shares insights into the making of the beautiful track

A new song titled “Nikat” has been released by lyricist Siddhant Kaushal, known for his work on popular tracks such as “So Ja Ri Muniya”, “Haaye Oye”, “Haanji”, and “Prem Pujari”. This latest song, part of Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment’s film “Kill”, has been sung by Rekha Bhardwaj and has quickly gained traction online since its release on June 29. We spoke with Siddhant Kaushal to learn more about the creation of “Nikat” and the film.

How did the word “Nikat” come to mind? What was the process of making the song?
I have to credit this song to two music directors: Haroon and Gavin. Our coordination is excellent, and they are the composers of this track. I particularly admire Haroon’s composition skills. When this song was presented to me, Haroon mentioned that we needed to create a romantic song about a girl deeply in love with a boy. I remember struggling with the first few lines while Haroon was in the studio. After half an hour of brainstorming and some coffee, inspiration struck, and I came up with "Nikat Tere Aaiyan, Sajan Laiyaan Laiyaan." Haroon immediately liked it, and we decided to go with it. We then sent the song to Megha, the assistant to Dharma's music supervisor Azim Dayani. Megha and Azim both loved it, and that’s how the song took shape and gained popularity.

How did the song get the name "Nikaat" and who gave it this name?
Azim Dayani deserves credit for the title “Nikat.” Although I initially titled the song “Laiyaan Laiyaan,” Azim felt that “Nikat” was a fresher term that would resonate well with listeners. His insight into what appeals to audiences is remarkable, and his suggestion helped finalize the song’s title.

What is it like working with Dharma? And how big a fan are you of Dharma Music?
I am a huge fan of Dharma's music and dream of writing all the songs for one of Karan Sir’s films. Working with Dharma has always been a goal, and having the opportunity to write for an entire film would be a dream come true. It's an amazing feeling when a film’s soundtrack is created by a single lyricist.

What are your upcoming projects? Have you been offered the complete album for any film?
While I can't share too many details about my upcoming projects, I can confirm that several are in the works. I have written all the songs for Aditya Dhar’s upcoming film “Dhoom Dhaam.” Working with Aditya, who has directed Uri and Article 370, was a fantastic experience. Our collaboration on this project has been the best so far.
