Bad Newz director Anand Tiwari Interview: Karan Johar is genius to look at the content of all kinds

In an exclusive interview with PeepingMoon, Bad Newz director Anand Tiwari opens up on how he got on board for the comedy caper. He thanks Karan Johar who produced the movie featuring Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, and Ammy Virk. He also discussed why the movie is centered around a medical phenomenon Heteropaternal Superfecundation. According to him directors and actors are a single team and every actor is important to him.

How did Bad Newz happen to you?

All thanks to Karan Johar sir, he has been very closely monitoring Amrit and my growth. He is very kind and like an elder brother to us. One day he called me and said ‘there is a script that I would like you to consider. Read and tell me what you think about it.’ So I read it, I really loved it. Somen had found an article, and Ishita had written a draft of it. I took Ishita and Karan sir’s permission to do own intimitation of it and we got Tarun to write for us.

Tarun Dudeja is a brilliant writer who took what was there and brought his own ethos. We jammed and made the film that you finally see. So between Amrit, Tarun, and I really bonded well in the various prep times that we wrote the film and every scene that we interpreted keeping the core. So that's how the journey of our Bad Newz was.

How does the concept of Heteropaternal Superfecundation come to discuss in bad news?

All thanks to Somen, the head of creative at Dharma. He found an article and he thought what if we make a film out of it? And by the time we came on board, Ishita and he had already done a draft. So the credit goes to them for that. We took it and made it our own and Heteropaternal Superfecundation is such a unique phenomenon.

We thought it would be such a crazy thing to make a film like they already made with a complicated pregnancy and called it Good Newwz. What if we make such a unique phenomenon and call it Bad Newz? And I think that's the genius of Karan Johar to look at the content of all kinds and give it to his own commercial films.

Among Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, and Ammy Virk who was the most convincing actor while filming?

I genuinely believe that the director and the actors are a single team. It would be easier for them to see if I was convincing enough as a director. I'm not because I'm a singularity. For me, they're all equal. Whether they are there for the film, whether they're there for one scene, all actors are equal to me. So it doesn't matter whether it is Vicky who is also my friend and very big star or whether it is any actor So not just Ammy and Triptii, Neha Dhupia Sheeba Chaddha, all these actors are all as important to me. So they're as convincing as the other.

Earlier the movie was titled Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam so how Bad Newz happened?

In Hindi cinema, you have to lock dates because locking Friday is a mammoth issue.
At some stage, we wanted to lock a date and we tentatively titled Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam. It was never going to be the title of the film. It was always going to be a sister concern of Good Newwz. Even from the time it was written, as you see there, there is a pregnancy complication here it is also pregnancy complications. So the twist of bad news, we were hoping that it would land, but sometimes titles need a certain amount of research. We didn't want to expose that so soon. And when the time was right, when we had the release date locked, then we knew that we will get a good release, which will have enough of a run. That's when you know we locked the title for everyone. And again, Karan sir, it's his genius that helped the trailer get attraction and it did because people straight away liked Good Newz, which is such a loved film and associated with Bad Newz.
