Saleha Khan to Aditi Gupta: Meet the 5 influencers who are raising awareness about menstrual health

That time of the month is a painful reminder of what it takes to have a uterus. The cramps, mood swings, and pain are some of the very few known facts surrounding your period. But what if we tell you there's more to learn? What if we tell you that everything that you may hear online about menstruation, may not necessarily be true? For a country that celebrates the onset of a child's period, we have our fair share of myths and stereotypes towards a natural, biological process.

That's where our 5 influencers come in. To break this vicious cycle of celebration and distrust towards a biological process. Debunking myths and stereotypes surrounding a monthly cycle of the female body, these social media influencers have taken it upon themselves to educate people and know about their period health better:

DR. TANAYA

Dr. Tanaya is a popular feature on a lot of pages due to the vast audience she has amassed. Teaching people about their overall well-being and menstrual health, this doctor is a fan favourite. Debunking internet myths and stereotypes around menstrual cycles, Tanaya loves her educating her audience about various aspects of period health, including sanitary products.

Saleha Khan has been an active member of the menstrual educators' squad for a while. A Savitri Bai Phule awardee and an International Children Peace Prize nominee, she has taken part in various period health drives to distribute sanitary napkins and pads to people who may not be able to afford them. Saleha has been raising awareness in various sectors of society that need to destigmatize a period from a disgusting thing that happens every month to a normal, natural biological process. 

ADITI GUPTA

Entrepreneur Aditi Gupta has committed her life to better period education via her fun Instagram page called 'Menstrupedia.' She uses memes, TED talks, and various avenues to get a better outreach and touch as many lives as possible. She has collaborated with UNICEF Assam in order to raise awareness around menstrual health and released a fun book to do so. She has now launched an app called Flobuddy - an app to create a taboo-free environment for kids to learn about menstrual health. 

URMILA CHANAM

Urmila Chanam is a menstrual activist who advocates for better healthcare and provision for people with a uterus who have their period. She is a journalist, the founder of Breaking The Silence, and a Laadli Media awardee. Oftentimes, on her page, she uses diagrams to explain and educate her followers about menstrual health.  

ANISHA BHATIA

19-year-old Anisha Bhatia is the head of communication at The Period Society, a non-profit organisation that discusses period health, products, and awareness campaigns. She is also a TEDx speaker and an artist who works towards debunking the myths and building a safer period environment for all.
