Vogue’s February issue ft. Madam Vice President Kamala Harris sparks controversy; netizens call out magazine for a dull, washed-out cover

In less than two weeks, Kamala Harris will make history as the first Black woman and first South Asian American woman to be elected as vice president of the United States. To celebrate this historic moment and milestone achievement, Vogue featured Madam Vice President on its February 2021 issue. Photographed by Tyler Mitchell, Kamala posed in a black Donald Deal suit teamed up with a pair of casual converse sneakers. Standing in front of a pink and green backdrop, she paid an ode to her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

However, this cover did not go well with the netizens and quickly drew criticism. The internet tribe pointed out the washed out background and the poor choice of styling did not reflect the power of position that Kamala will hold.

“Amazing woman on not so amazing cover,” said one user. “THIS is the cover they chose?” commented another.

Now, it has been revealed that Kamala’s team, who was responsible for the styling, was also taken off-guard with the choice of cover. According to online websites, HuffPost and Fashionista.com, the VP and her team a different shot as the cover photo. “In the cover that they expected, Vice President-elect Harris was wearing a powder blue suit. That was the cover that the Vice President-elect's team and the Vogue team, including Anna Wintour, mutually agreed upon . . . which is standard for fashion magazines,” A source from HuffPost quoted.

Later, Vogue released another shot as its digital cover that featured the soon-to-be vice president in a powder blue Michael Kors suit against a golden backdrop. If one goes by the sources, the image where Kamala posed in Converse sneaks was supposed to be featured inside the magazine.
