People Tree wins copyright case over Yogi print design; reaches settlement with Christian Dior

Delhi-based brand People Tree, founded by renowned Indian artist Orijit Sen and his wife Gurpreet Sidhu, has finally reached an out-of-court settlement with international brand Christian Dior after months. For the uninitiated, Orijit made front news in January this year for accusing the ace style beacon of plagiarism after spotting their block prints on Sonam Kapoor’s outfit, on the Elle cover. The magazine cover which was the talk-of-the-town for Sonam’s Boho Dior outfit with the Yogi print design soon got caught in the middle of a copyright mess.

But now Orijit announced the settlement in a Facebook post on Monday, not revealing any further details. “As a part of this settlement, we have had to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement that constrains us from revealing further details about the nature of the settlement.”, he wrote. However, he further revealed his “long-standing dream of setting up a properly equipped studio and workshops for collaborative crafts, art and design projects”, with a studio being set up in Goa.

There has been no official statement from Christian Dior so far.

People Tree was founded in 1990 and talking about the Dior design, Orijit had earlier told a leading daily, “It’s one of our classics, which has sustained itself because of its popularity. It’s not just a question of inspiration. They [Dior] have also copied the colour combination. It’s a total rip off. We are in talks with a lawyer to see what our legal options are,” Sidhu had said.

Well, social media with such huge implications never fails to amaze us.
