The ongoing ‘Black Lives Matter’ moment has shed light on the deep-rooted racism in the fashion fraternity worldwide. While many high-end fashion labels and beauty brands were praised for pledging donations and changing their internal working system, some were called out for their racist actions in the past.
Amongst the one to face the flack was Conde Nast’s Vogue Magazine. Magazine’s Editor-In-Chief, Anna Wintour recently apologized for race-related mistakes via an internal e-mail chain, but some of the black ex-employees, supported by Diet Prada, shared their terrible experiences of working with the magazine earlier. Given the flack that was received, it was also speculated that Anna might step down from her position, however those rumors were also quashed in Conde Nast’s town hall meeting.
While Conde Nast is still under scrutiny for its behavior against black employees, Diet Prada went ahead and shed the light on the instances of insensitivity that were right there on the surface. Sharing a few magazine covers, the fashion police presented some ‘controversial moments’ from Vogue’s history of cultural appropriation that used black and well as POC models as mere props to glamorize the white privilege. Take a look.
Diet shared a post featuring a series of magazine covers that glorified cultural appropriation and highlighted big names like LeBron James, Karlie Kloss, Irina Shayk, Kendall Jenner, Scarlett Johansson, amongst many others. However, one such cover that was called out by DP was the April 2019’s cover that featured actress Deepika Padukone.

Titled ‘Celebration of Global Talent’ this issue was supposed to focus on ‘the new center which is everywhere and nowhere at once.’ Although, as pointed out by Diet Prada, the white actress Scarlett was still in the center of the new ‘center’. Actresses of color, Deepika, and Adesua Etomi were placed at her side as mere props.
