Most of the negative comments were by women: Housewife-turned-Malayalam actress Rajini Chandy on getting trolled for ‘sexy’ photoshoot

Housewife-turned-Malayalam actor Rajini Chandy who usually dresses up in vibrant and colourful sarees recently took the internet by the storm with her latest photoshoot. Ditching the six-yard staple, the 69-year-old sported western wear and made for a jaw-dropping muse in denim jackets, jumpsuits and flowy dresses.

Age being no barrier to beauty, she definitely looked mesmerizing in all her pictures, however, this photoshoot wasn’t taken in the best of spirits by the internet tribe. Soon, Rajini found her at the receiving end of the trolls for doing this ‘sexy’ photoshoot. Many bullied the actress for her choice of clothes given her age. In a recent interview with BBC, the actress said, “I was called a slut. Someone asked me, ‘Haven’t you died yet?’ Another suggested that I ‘sit at home and read the Bible. This is your age to pray, not show off your body’. Yet another person said I was an old auto-rickshaw and even if I got a new coat of paint, I’d still be old."

She also confessed that the trolls were getting to her and was shocked at the online hatred. “A lot of young men find sexiness in older women disturbing, they don’t want to think of them as an object of desire. But what I found surprising was that most of the negative comments were made by women,”

Following an unconventional path since the very beginning, Rajini made her debut at the age of 65 in a Malayalam-language comedy-drama, Oru Muthassi Gadha (A Granny’s Mace) and was later seen in the second season of Bigg Boss. The intention behind this photoshoot was to motivate older people to still enjoy their lives.

She also revealed that she hasn’t worn such clothes in a really long time, but was instantly comfortable once she tried them on. “In December, Athira Joy (photographer) asked me if I'd be interested in doing a photoshoot and whether I had any inhibitions wearing Western clothes. I said no, I used to wear them all the time when I was younger. I told her I even have a photograph in a swimsuit."
