Myntra changes logo after women's rights activist files police complaint against it for being 'offensive' and 'suggestive'

The E-commerce platform, Myntra, had to change its logo after Mumbai-based activist Naaz Patel alleged that it 'depicts a woman’s vagina'. The letter ‘M’ designed with overlapping shades of pink and orange get formed Myntra's logo. Now, amid the outrage, the logo has been tweaked and will be changed across the app, website and packaging material.

In December 2020, Naaz filed a complaint with Mumbai Police's cyber cell and accused that the logo of the e-commerce platform owned by Flipkart was insulting and offensive to women. The founder-director of the Avesta Foundation, also said that the "overall placement of the colour scheme" of the letter ‘M’ in Myntra’s logo was "obscene to eyes of any person of normal prudence". She further claimed that is was "deliberate placement of the colour scheme to depict a woman’s vagina and such is again highlighted with colour scheme of depicting her legs spread out in a suggestive manner."

The complainant also added that such "portrayal of a woman and her private parts…as an object of lust" would "corrupt the minds of the viewers and even excite them" and "this will lead to further victimisation of women in our society". She demanded Myntra to change the logo or face legal actions.

Rashmi Karandikar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) told a media agency, "We called a meeting with Myntra following the complaint, they (Myntra) came and agreed to change the logo. They have sent an e-mail as well on the same."

Myntra, in a written response, said, "Persuant to our meeting, we wish to inform you that we have decided to revise the Myntra Logo." The design of the new logo was also sent with the letter. The authorities at Myntra reportedly assured the Police that the new logo will appear on their packaging and marketing material after exhausting the old inventory with "physical pre-printed material with existing logo across India."
