Tennis champion Naomi Osaka is a star on the court and is all set to be a star off the court with the launch of her own sun and skincare line 'Kinló,' which is specifically designed to meet the needs of darker-skinned people. Osaka, who is of Japanese and Haitian descent, decided to start this skincare line to protect melanated skin tones better as there is not much representation or products which specifically target the needs of pigmented dark skin.
In the United States, about 33% of Black Americans die of melanoma, a skin cancer that is considered as one of the deadliest forms of cancer, within five years of diagnosis, according to the National Cancer Institute as compared to the relatively low numbers of White Americans. And with not many products designed to protect darker skin tones, it became a matter of great concern to the tennis champion.
Her own personal experiences with skincare issues from her childhood contributed to the inspiration behind this line. The word 'Kinló' is two words of two different languages coming together, 'Kin' stands for gold in Japanese, and 'ló' stands for gold in Haitian.
The aim of the skincare line is to protect the skin from the harmful radiations of the sun and rejuvenate darker skin to have a healthy and happy glow. The line is set to launch in fall 2021 and will be sold direct to consumer via Kinló's official website
