Cardi B, Beyonce-Jay Z, Drake lead the MTV VMA's 2018 nominations

The MTV Video Music Awards will return this year with a better and bigger show lined up for August 20, 2018. The nominations for the same have been announced on Saturday, July 14 via Instagram official account's IGTV feature. This is the first time that the new platform has been used to this capacity.

After having been criticised for not giving due recognition to artists in various categories, this year the VMA's have redone their nominations and it's worthy of an applause. From creating new categories for fresh artists to dedicating a separate category for Latin American music, VMA 2018 looks interesting already.

Leading the nominations overall is rapper Cardi B, who recently featured in Adam Levin's Girls Like You. This year she managed to score a whole of ten nominations including Best Video of the Year, Best Song, Artist of the year amongst other. Following her lead are THE CARTERS a.k.a Queen Bey and Jay Z for their newest single APES*IT with eight nominations including Best Video of the Year and Best Collaboration. Beyonce has been reigning with all her glory for years, her hit song Formation was a super hit at the VMA's last year.

Next on the top nominations are Drake with seven nominations and Bruno Mars with six. Ariana Grande and Camila Cabello bagged five nominations each while Ed Sheeran, Young Thug and Khalid are nominated for five categories each. However, VMA has missed out on many veterans while managing to incorporate new ones.

Taylor Swift, who has given his like Are you ready for it?, Delicate, End Game, Look what you made me do, this year is missing from nominations. She has been a constant at the award show for years with nominations and many grand performances over the past years. Justin Timberlake and Kendrick Lamar, who have given few of the top hits, will also be MIA this year.

While the list of nomination is creating a mixed wave, of both excitement and disappointment, we're waiting for the unveiling of the bigger picture - the Performance list.
