The Brit Awards: Beyonce and Jay Z pay unexpected tribute to Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle

Beyonce and Jay-Z have paid tribute to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex because of the Black History Month. They swapped her with one of art history’s most popular and recognizable figures-the Mona Lisa. Beyonce and Jay Z could not attend the Brit Awards, the UK’s equivalent of the Grammys, they chose to accept the award for the best international group via a video message. Sharing the video on Instagram, Beyonce said, “In honour of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas."

The video is a reference to their 'Apes**t' music video in which they stand in front of the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris. However, the couple restaged the video next to a portrait of Meghan Markle. Beyonce wrote on Instagram, "Thank you to the Brits for the award for Best International Group. I won this award back in 2002 with my besties, Kelly and Michelle. How lucky am I to have been in a group with my other best friend, the GOAT Hova. In honor of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy."

In the video, Beyonce says, "Thank you so much to the BRIT Awards for this incredible honour. You guys have always been so supportive, everything is love. Thank you." Jay Z then jokes, "You're welcome," then the pair turn their backs to the camera and look at Meghan’s regal portrait.

Meghan who is seven months pregnant married Prince Harry last year in a ceremony that was watched live by millions around the globe. She has been subjected to various headlines this year that harp on her mixed parentage and on her Black lineage.
