2019 has been a great year for Hollywood. This year saw some of the biggest film releases ever and it is safe to say that most swept the box office clean with profits worth millions of dollars.
While 2019 boasts of many fan-favourite sequels, the year has also seen many smaller budget films gain critical appreciation. We are sure that the fight for the Best Film award will be a tough one, especially with the second half of the year still waiting to roll around.
Here’s looking at some of the Best Films of 2019 released so far based on reviews received from film critics as well as their domestic and international box office success:
Avengers: Endgame
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame has been in the works since the first-ever film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man, released in 2008. Starring Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson among others, Avengers: Endgame became the highest-grossing film of the year with a whopping $850 million in the US and a worldwide total of $2.7 billion.
Fyre
The superior of the two Fyre Festival documentaries which released this year, Netflix’s Fyre gives its viewers a deep-dive in the disaster that was the horribly managed Fyre Festival organized by Billy McFarlane and rapper Ja Rule. From advertisements shot in the Bahamas, private luxury tents promised to the highly-memeable Andy King interview, almost 20 million users watched the documentary within the first month of its release.
Us
Director-comedian Jordan Peele’s follow-up to the psychological thriller Get Out had fans waiting in anticipation and it followed through and how! This horror film left us all terrified of doppelgangers and portrayed complex themes of race wonderfully. Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss among others, the film grossed $175 million in the US and $254.7 million worldwide.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
Starring the ‘internet’s boyfriend’ Keanu Reeves, John Wick 3 continued the storyline from the second installment and raised the level of action which is exactly what fans wanted to see. Critics called it ‘entertaining’, ‘gorgeously choreographed’ and ‘overwhelming’ and we totally agree with them! The film earned $166.5 million in the US and $312.9 million worldwide and is all set for a fourth film in the franchise.
Aladdin
This is the year of Disney’s live-action remakes of their classic films and Aladdin came through with the fan’s expectations! Starring Mena Massoud as the titular character, Will Smith as the Genie and Naomi Scott as Jasmine, critics agreed that it did not match the original but it’s new flavour, elaborate songs and costumes made it a crowd-pleaser, making $929.4 million worldwide! A sequel to the film has already been announced.
Booksmart
Films made on high school friendships never get old, but what makes Booksmart different, is its hot take on sexuality, nerd culture and ultimate comedy duo Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut is the perfect coming-of-age film for 2019 and it made over $23 million in the US.
Rocketman
This biographical musical based on the life of British musician Elton John, the film was shrouded in controversy over the casting of the straight Taron Egerton to play the gay artist. But once the film released, both critics and audiences alike were left speechless over Taron’s performance. His rendition of Elton’s Rocketman, the song which inspired the name of the film, received much praise. The film made a worldwide collection of $176.3 million.
Toy Story 4
For any kid or adult, Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toys are the ultimate symbols of friendship and nostalgia. Starring Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Rashida Jones, Keegan-Michael Key and Keanu Reeves, the film the same love and critical appreciation as the previous films from the franchise. Toy Story 4 domestically grossed $332 million and $677 million worldwide.
Yesterday
This British comedy film directed by Danny Boyle follows a struggling musician played by Himesh Patel, who after suffering an accident, finds himself to be the only person who remembers The Beatles. Also starring Lily James, Yesterday is charming and beautiful and made $62.3 million worldwide.
Apollo 11
Director Todd Douglas Miller’s 2019 documentary has been hailed nothing short of inspiring. With breathtaking visuals, Apollo 11 premiered on the 50th anniversary of the United States’ first trip to the moon. This feature will fill you with adrenaline as they show footage shot by cameras held by Neil Amstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. Apollo 11 has made $9 million with its small domestic release.
