Patrick Dempsey's return to Grey’s Anatomy takes fans by surprise, the actor says their response has been incredible

Patrick Dempsey lit up the internet as he reprised his role of Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy. The fans had a right to freak out as it’s been five long years since he parted ways with the show and that too not on the best of terms. However, in a new interview with a leading online portal, Dempsey referred to his latest cameo as ‘a very healing process’.

He said, “I think the whole atmosphere has changed, certainly working at the beach, and seeing everybody again was really a very healing process, and really rewarding, and a lot of fun. And hopefully, that feeling translates, and the fans enjoy it. I know that they’ve been wanting us to get back together, and I think this will satisfy a lot of people, and surprise a lot of people, hopefully.”

He further said, “It was really exciting and fun, and it was great to see everybody. The dynamic behind the camera had changed. There’s much more diversity within the crew. There was a nice balance, too, of equality that I was seeing. So, culturally, there was a lot of things that were different, that I thought were very positive and very inspiring, actually.”

Patrick said that the audience’s “response has been incredibly overwhelming and very moving.” When asked about his appearance in the episodes of Season 17, Patrick did not reveal a number but said that Derek “comes back throughout the season.”

Apparently, Dempsey had reached out to his former co-star Ellen Pompeo during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. From there, the pair went on a hike in Malibu where Ellen asked him if he would like to be a part of season 17 which might be the show’s last. Talking about catching up with Ellen, Dempsey said, “We hadn’t spoken or been together for a while. It was a great opportunity to catch up and say, ‘Okay, what can we do for all the frontline responders?’ I’ve been tracking what Grey’s had been doing with giving masks, and making sure that people had the right equipment, and it came from that place—‘Okay, what can we do to make people feel better, to give some comfort in this time of uncertainty?’ And that’s how it began.”
