Oscars 2021: Sooriya’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’, Nila Madhab Panda’s ‘Kalira Atita’ and Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ ‘The White Tiger’ named in the eligibility list for Best Picture nominations

There is some good news for Indian films, ahead of Oscars 2021 nominations, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released a list of 366 films that are eligible for Best Picture nominations. The final list of nominations will be announced on March 15, 2021. However, of the 366 films listed, two Indian language films, Suriya’s Tamil film Soorarai Pottru and Odia movie Kalira Atita have become eligible to be nominated at the 93rd Academy Awards. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Rajkummar Rao's and Adarsh Gourav's The White Tiger has also been listed. 

Soorarai Pottru is partly based on the life and times of Simplifly Deccan founder and aviation pioneer GR Gopinath. It is directed by Sudha Kongara and is produced by Suriya and Guneet Monga. The actor’s production house 2D Entertainment Pvt Ltd tweeted about the same.

On the other hand, Odia director Nila Madhab Panda had also entered his film Kalira Atita (Yesterday’s Past) for the Oscars 2021. The film is about the disappearing villages of India’s eastern coastline in Odisha because of climate change and rising sea levels. Panda also shared the big news on Twitter. 

The White Tiger is the screen adaptation of Aravind Adiga's novel of the same name and is directed by Iranian filmmaker Ramin Bahrani. The film is produced by Mukul Deora and Priyanka. 

The films will be made available at the Academy Screening Room where the academy members will vote on the nominations. The Oscars are scheduled to be held on April 25, 2021.
