Rachel Zegler to play the titular role of Snow White in Disney’s live-action remake of the classic animated film

Although her breakout role as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s new retelling of West Side Story does not come out until December, Rachel Zegler is on a roll having backed the titular role of Snow White in Disney’s upcoming remake of the classic fairytale. She will also appear alongside Zachary Levi in Shazam’s sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

The live-action Snow White and Seven Dwarfs will be directed by Marc Webb with Marc Platt producing the film. Shortly after the casting was announced, Zegler enthusiastically tweeted “I HAVE MANIFESTED MY ENTIRE LIFE I THINK I THINK.” She also shared a video on Twitter meeting the Disney princess with the caption “homegirl we have LOTS to catch up on.”

Talking about Rachel, Webb said in a statement, “Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale.”

The original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs cartoon, based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, was released in 1938. It was Disney’s first animated feature and became a massive success. According to reports, the live-action film will expand upon the story and music from the original. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul have been roped in to create new songs for the film.

Rachel’s audition and footage from the West Side Story blew the studio execs and helped push her casting across the finish line. It also marks a step in diversifying Disney Princess characters and comes on the heels of casting Halle Bailey as Ariel in the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid.
