Netflix and Howard University team up to honour late Chadwick Boseman, establish $5.4 million scholarship in his memory

Renowned Hollywood actor Chadwick Boseman succumbed to colon cancer in August 2020. A year later, Netflix has come forward to establish a $5.4 million endowed scholarship at Howard University as a way to honour the actor who graduated from the College of Fine Arts. In May, the College of Fine Arts was renamed after the late actor. The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will target students who “exemplify exceptional skills in the arts reminiscent of Mr. Boseman” and struggle financially.

According to reports, the scholarship programme will kickstart next year. Reportedly, a first-year student will be selected annually for the scholarship. It will cover full tuition (worth $113,800) for four years. In a statement, Chadwick's wife Simone Ledward-Boseman said, "Many exemplary artists are not afforded the opportunity to pursue higher learning, we hope to support as many students as possible by removing the financial barrier to education. This endowment represents Chad’s devotion to the craft, his compassion for others, and his desire to support future storytellers."

Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-chief executive and chief content officer, shared in a statement, "While he was taken from us too soon, his spirit is with us always in his work and the good that he has inspired. He always spoke of his time at Howard and the positive way it shaped his life and career. Now, we will have the opportunity to give many future superheroes a chance to experience the same."

Chadwick, a native of South Carolina, had graduated from Howard University in 2000 with a bachelor of fine arts in directing.
