Riverdale star Lili Reinhart has called out Kim Kardashian for sending out wrong messages to her legions of fans over crash-course dieting just to fit into a dress. Lili said it was “so wrong” for Kim to adopt a month-long diet just to lose 16 pounds so that she could fit in the iconic Marilyn Monroe’s dress for Monday’s Met Gala. Lili asked fans and media to “stop supporting” celebs whose “entire image revolves around their bodies.” Kim wore Monroe’s famous dress that she wore in 1962 to sing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy at an event.
Taking to her Instagram stories, Lili fired Kim for starving herself to fit into the dress which she actually couldn’t zip eventually. In a series of blunt Instagram posts, Lili wrote, “To walk a red carpet and do an interview where you say how starving you are... because you haven't eaten carbs in the last month... all to fit in a f—ing dress?" She continued and wrote, “So wrong. So f—ed on 100s of levels. To openly admit to starving yourself for the sake of the Met Gala. When you know very well that millions of young men and women are looking up to you and listening to your every word."
Lili, who plays Betty Cooper on Riverdale wrote, “The ignorance is other-worldly and disgusting. Please stop supporting these stupid, harmful celebrities whose entire image revolves around their bodies.” Defending her outburst she further wrote, “I am not generally an angry person but I swear to god, the toxicity of this industry sometimes really gets to me and I have to do my little Instagram-story rants to release my rage.”
Although Lili’s comments on Instagram expired since they were shared on stories, she took to Twitter to reiterate her stand and defend airing out her complaints publicly. She wrote, “I do not say the things that I say because I want to be relevant or get attention. I speak up because I don’t see enough people with large platforms calling out toxic behavior in our industry. Some people will never understand where I’m coming from and that’s okay.”
Speaking on the red carpet of the Met Gala, Kim had said, "I tried it on, and it didn't fit me. And so I looked at it, and I said 'give me three weeks’. I had to lose 16 pounds to be able to fit this, but it was such a challenge. I was determined to fit it. I always thought she was extremely curvy. So when it didn’t fit me I wanted to cry because it can’t be altered at all. I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein. I was so strict. I wanted to cry tears of joy when it went up." After the Met, Kim also posted footage of herself eating donuts and pizzas in her hotel room, celebrating the end of her "diet".
This is not the first time that Kim has been called out for sending out wrong messages about dieting and body image. She also received flak for an episode on Keeping Up With The Kardashians when she was called “skinny” and “anorexic” by her sisters Khloe Kardashian and Kendal Jenner and she responded with a beaming smile and a “Thank You.”
