Deadpool 3: Ryan Reynolds announces Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine in the sequel; film to hit theatres on Sep 6, 2024; watch

Trust Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to amp things up with their antics. No, no the actors are not indulging in some social media banter but have some extremely exciting news for their fans. Ryan took to his social media to announce that Hugh will be back as Wolverine aka Logan aka James Howlett in Deadpool 3. Deadpool 3 also has an official release date of September 6, 2024. Ryan will reprise his role of merc with a mouth – Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool in the film once again. The third film is special as it will be his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sharing a video and referencing to the D23 Expo in early September, Ryan said, “Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now. I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every ‘Deadpool’ needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I…I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”

“Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks as Jackman walks by in the background going up the stairs. To this Hugh replies with, “Yeah, sure, Ryan.” The video ends with Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You playing in the background but this time subtitled as, “I will always love Hugh,”- and a “Coming Hughn” teaser. The Deadpool logo appears on the screen which is quickly sliced up by Wolverine’s adamantium claws.

Deadpool 3 is directed by Shawn Levy who also weighed in the announcement of the dynamic duo teaming up once again. He joked that the news has been “burning a hole” in his lips for weeks now. Deadpool was first introduced as Weapon XI in X-Men Origins: Wolverine in which he fights Wolverine and comes off worse eventually and had his mouth sewn shut and sans his famous red-and-black costume. It will be pretty exciting to see the two stars share screen space once again in Deadpool 3.

Hugh had bid adieu to playing Wolverine on screen with 2016’s Logan, which he called it his swan song. Wolverine dies in the film so it is unclear how he’ll appear in Deadpool 3 but the character is best known for repeatedly breaking the fourth wall — on film and in the comics — and as Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently said, “Anything’s possible in the multiverse,” so we can expect some surprises. Meanwhile, Logan director James Mangold who ended Logan’s story once and for all responded to the news with a simple gif from his film.
