Princess Diaries 3 in the works at Disney, Anne Hathaway not yet confirmed to reprise her role

Disney is making its way back to Genovia for a third Princess Diaries film. However, it’s not clear yet whether Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as Princess Mia Thermopolis in the new installment, which is being written by Aadrita Mukerji. Although, Anne recently expressed her interest in returning to the franchise along with her on-screen grandmother Julie Andrews, who played the post Queen Clarisse Renaldi as the film was the breakthrough movie of her career.

Anne had told an online portal previously about her interest in reprising her role and had said, “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.”

Andrews’ involvement in Princess Diaries 3 is similarly questionable as plot details have not been revealed but the third part will continue the story after The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement sequel rather than rebooting the series.

The Princess Diaries films were directed by the late Garry Marshall and were based on Meg Cabot’s 2001 novel The Princess Diaries. The films follow an awkward American teenager who learns after the death of her estranged father that she is the rightful heir to the European kingdom of Genovia. She goes from an ugly duckling to a graceful swan as she prepares to take on the mantle of governing her kingdom. The films became a massive hit and the sequel Royal Engagement introduced Chris Pine as the male lead. The Princess Diaries also starred Heather Matarazzo and Mandy Moore.
