A Bollywood film album is when the music meets the glamour and visuals of the mainstream Hindi cinema. While some associate a particular singer’s voice with the leading hero’s face, others claim music to be an integral part of a film narrative. So be it anything, music is certainly the heart and soul of any Hindi film. (Even if are going songless in films these days)
Well, it would not be wrong to say that every music label and composer wishes to create an album, in which each and every song leaves a lasting impression on you. Now as 2019 has come to its close, we have definitely a fair share of great albums and their songs to hum to.
A quick rewind of best music and albums and songs, in 2019, month-wise:
Albums
Gully Boy
Soon after Zoya Akhtar announced Gully Boy, her lead actor Ranveer Singh was spotted attending sessions with Mumbai-based rappers. Rappers Divine and Naezy's uber-popular song Mere Gully Mein was recreated by Ranveer in the film but it was Doori, when Ranveer actually won over our hearts. Written by Javed Akhtar, Divine and composed by British producer Rishi Rich, the song focussed on the duality of Mumbai city and its tone with lyrics like 'Ek duniya mein do duniya, ujala ek andhera / ek sethji aur ek chela’ are hard-hitting. Apart from them, Dub Sharma's two politically relevant tracks — Azaadi and Jingostan and others like Train Song (by Raghu Dixit), Jahaan Tu Chala (by Jasleen Royal), Goriye (by Prem & Hardeep), India 91 and Jeene Mein Aaye Maza (by Ankur Tewari) are well-paced. Last but not the least, Divine's music in Sher Aaya Sher is bliss and Apna Time Aayega turned out to be the anthem of this generation. In all, the album of Gully Boy could ignite romance, passion, friendship everything while making you inclined towards rap artists.
The 18-song soundtrack which was released in all streaming platforms involves an estimated 54 contributors, which include rappers from across the country, deejays, music producers and beatboxers, such as Divine, Naezy, Sez on the beat, Rishi Rich, Dub Sharma, Jasleen Royal, Ace, Ishq Bector, MC Altaf, MC TodFod, 100 RBH, Maharya, Noxious D, Viveick Rajagopalan, and others. Ankur Tewari has worked as the music supervisor with these artists.
Luka Chuppi
The makers of the Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon starrer just followed a simple formula - just recreate songs that are already popular amongst the audience. For instance, Coca Cola Tu, originally co-written, composed and sung by Tony Kakkar, with rap by Young Desi, was recreated for the film with his sister, Neha Kakkar’s vocals. Then there is Poster Lagwa Do reboot from Guddu Dhanoa’s 1997 romance-action flick Aflatoon apart from the recreated version of Punjabi song, Tu Laung Main Elaachi. Oh, how can one forget Photo and Duniya. All in all, the five-track album was a ‘curated’ playlist of popular hits and undoubtedly, it resonated with the listeners quicker.
Kalank
The music of Abhishek Varman’s directorial tried to complement the mood, era and the scale that the film was mounted upon. While Ghar More Pardesiya, sung by Shreya Ghoshal with Pritam’s music, took us back in time, other songs like First Class and Aira Gaira attempted to cater to the millennial audience. Meanwhile, the title track of Kalank is more like a ballad with Arijit Singh’s soul-stirring voice. On the other hand, Tabah Ho Gaye with Madhuri Dixit’s moves celebrates love that will leave you shattered. The soundtrack recreated the times gone by and proved to do it beautifully as well.
Bharat
Vishal-Shekhar took Bharat’s music to the top with their track Slow Motion, which will force you to dance a step and also, Chashni, which makes for arguably the best songs from the jukebox. Aithey Aa is the quintessential peppy sangeet/wedding category song but fares decently. Zinda with its thumping beats and Turpeya with its done-to-death fiery lyrics are other winners from the list. Last but not least, the hymn-like Aaya Na Tu stands out for its patriotic flavour. Nonetheless, Bharat’s album is a mix of hits and the not so bad misses. All credit to Irshad Kamil's lyrics!
Kabir Singh
Kabir Singh, starring Shahid Kapoor is an adaptation of Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy. Much like its protagonist, the soundtracks are also angst-laden, starting from Bekhayali, which depicts the extreme frustration of a lover sans his beloved. While Kaise Hua is more like an old English classical rock number, Mere Sohneya is the peppy track with Punjabi beats. Arijit Singh once again took centre stage with Tujhe Kitna Chahne Lage Hum with tracks like Tera Ban Jaunga and Pehla Pyaar communicating the central message of undying love. Shreya Ghoshal, Akhil Sachdeva, Sachet-Parampara, Tulsi Kumar and other artists have all put their efforts into the much-loved album.
