So, our eyes popped alright at the teaser poster of the Karan Johar-Rohit Shetty collaboration, Simmba. Starring the irrepressible Ranveer Singh, the poster is both quirky and entertaining – much like the star himself! Simmba aka Sangram Bhalerao will be the notorious police officer who is sure to strike a chord with audiences across the country. Based on the Telugu hit Temper, this action-drama which releases on December 28, 2018 will see Singh as a cop with super swag.
Cops with swag are no strangers to the Hindi film screen. Our movies absolutely adore their cops, whether the hard-hitting crime-fighters, or the type that don’t take themselves too seriously. Even as we await the riot Ranveer has in store for us, we turn our attention to the men in uniform who were criminally funny!
Chulbul Pandey
A Robinhood of sorts, this police officer of Dabangg was a badass with a big heart. Set in UP, the film told the tale of the corrupt but fearless Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan), and his troubled relationship with his step-father and half-brother. Chulbul’s every look, his every step became iconic, from his pencil-thin moustache, to his trademark aviators, the crazy belt steps and those crazier dialogues… Ever heard a threat that went, “Hum tum mein itne ched karenge ... ki confuse ho jaoge ki saans kahan se le ... aur p****** kahan se”? Or an insult that was delivered thus – “Haramzaade se yaad aaya Chaube ji … aapke aadarniye pitashri aaj kal kaise hai?” Thank you, Pandeyji!
Lakhan Pratap Singh
In sharp contrast to his older, honest brother, Police Commissioner Ram Pratap Singh (Jackie Shroff), Inspector Lakhan Pratap Singh (Anil Kapoor) is the jovial, chirpy, get-rich-soon cop cut from a different cloth in Ram Lakhan. He uses his new status as a police officer to woo his childhood sweetheart Radha (Madhuri Dixit) and deal with her eccentric father Shastri (Anupam Kher).
However, many twists and turns later, the police brothers are at loggerheads, as Lakhan uses his clout to help smugglers, earn bribes and make an extra buck. Eventually tricked by the bad guys, he needs rescuing by - who else but older brother – the film wasn’t titled Ram Lakhan for nothing!
JCP Dashrath Singh
This cop was lethal… Hilarious, cool and lethal! JCP Dashrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan) is the only fly in the ointment, spoiling the continuous con game being played by Bunty (Abhishek Bachchan) and Babli (Rani Mukerji). As they pull off a series of scams in this crime-comedy, it is the JCP who relentlessly pursues them across India, and draws nearer each day… Eventually, when he does capture them, he is moved sufficiently by their heartfelt confessions and conversation, to let them go. His dialogue – “Kanoon saale ka kaam jurm ko mitana hota hai … logon ko nahi,” – pretty much summed up his motto in life in Bunty and Babli.
