Films to look forward to in 2022
RRR (January 7)
SS Rajamouli’s period drama RRR is all set to open in theatres on January 7. The film boasts of a stellar ensemble cast that includes Ram Charan, Jr.NTR, Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Olivia Morris, Alison Doody, Ray Stevenson and Shriya Saran.
Radhe Shyam (January 14)
Prabhas and Pooja Hegde starrer Radhe Shyam will hit theatres on January 14. The epic love story is directed by Radha Krishna Kumar and is set in the 1970s Europe with Prabhas playing a world-renowned palmist.
Prithviraj (January 21)
Akshay Kumar’s historical drama Prithviraj is all set to release on January 21. The YRF backed film will see Miss World 2017, Manushi Chhillar make her big Bollywood debut in the role of Princess Sanyogita.
Gehraiyaan (January 25 OTT release)
Shakun Batra’s romantic drama starring Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ananya Panday will head for an OTT release on January 25 on Amazon Prime Video.
Attack (January 28)
John Abraham starrer Attack will open in theatres on January 28. The film also stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Rakul Preet Singh.
Badhaai Do (February 4)
Rajkummar Rao’s and Bhumi Pednekar’s quirky comedy will hit screens on February 4. The family drama is jointly written by Suman Adhikary and Akshat Ghildial and directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni.
Shabaash Mithu (February 4)
Taapsee Pannu’s sports biopic on the Indian women cricket captain Mithali Raj, Shabaash Mithu will release on February 4 in theatres. The film is directed by Srijit Mukherjee.
Major (February 11)
Adivi Sesh starrer Major is a biopic on 2008 Mumbai attacks martyr Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan. It is Adivi’s Hindi film debut. He has also penned the script of the film. It is scheduled to hit screens on February 11.
Gangubai Kathiawadi (February 18)
Alia Bhatt’s film Gangubai Kathiawadi will regale audiences on February 18. The film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and also stars Ajay Devgn and Shantanu Maheshwari.
Jayeshbhai Jordaar (February 25)
Ranveer Singh starrer Jayeshbhai Jordaar will hit theatres on February 25. The film also marks the Bollywood debut of south film actress Shalini Pandey.
Bachchan Pandey (March 4)
Bachchan Pandey is an action comedy film starring Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon and Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead roles. The film is directed by Farhad Samji and will release on March 4.
Shamshera (March 18)
Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt will lock horns in Shamshera that is slated to release on March 18.
Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (March 25)
Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani and Tabu will bring the spook-fest on screens with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. The film is directed by Anees Bazmee and will release on March 25.
Anek (March 31)
Ayushmann Khurrana and Anubhav Sinha are reuniting for social drama Anek that is scheduled to hit theatres on March 31.
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (April 1)
R Madhavan will make his directorial debut with Rocketry: The Nambi Effect based on the life of Indian scientist Nambi Narayanan. Madhavan also plays the titular character in the film. Rocketry: The Nambi Effect is slated to release on April 1.
Dhaakad (April 8)
Kangana Ranaut’s spy thriller Dhaakad is set to be released theatrically on April 8, 2022. The film deals with the subject of child trafficking and the exploitation of women and also stars Arjun Rampal and Divya Dutta. The film is directed by Razneesh Razy Ghai.
KGF Chapter 2 (April 14)
Yash’s KGF Chapter 2 will hit theatres on April 14. The film is written and directed by Prashanth Neel and also stars Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon, Srinidhi Shetty and Prakash Raj.
Salaar (April 14)
Salaar is an action thriller headlined by Prabhas and written and directed by Prashanth Neel. The film also stars Shruti Haasan. It is slated to release on April 14.
Laal Singh Chaddha (April 14)
Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Forrest Gump remake Laal Singh Chaddha is slated to release on April 14, 2022. The film also stars Naga Chaitanya and is directed by Advaita Chandan.
Heropanti 2 (April 29)
Tiger Shroff will return with all guns blazing in Heropanti 2 along with Tara Sutaria. The film will hit screens on April 29.
Runway 34 (April 29)
Ajay Devgn returns to direction with Runway 34 that is slated to release on April 29. The film also stars Rakul Preet Singh, Amitabh Bachchan and Boman Irani.
Mission Majnu (May 13)
Sidharth Malhotra will be seen as a RAW spy in Mission Majnu. The film marks the Bollywood debut of popular southern actress Rashmika Mandanna. It will release on May 13.
Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway (May 20)
Rani Mukerjee starrer Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway that is based on a real incident that rocked children and human rights at an international level will be releasing on May 20.
Maidaan (June 3)
Ajay Devgn will unleash his soccer skills on the ground with Maidaan that sees him essay the role of India’s most prolific football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. The film is slated to release on June 3 and will mark the Bollywood debut of Keerthy Suresh.
Govinda Naam Mera (June 10)
Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar will unite for Govinda Naam Mera. The film is directed by Shashank Khaitan and will hit theatres on June 10.
Doctor G (June 17)
Ayushmann Khurrana will play a gynaecologist in Doctor G along with Rakul Preet Singh. The quirky comedy is scheduled to release on June 17.
Jug Jugg Jeeyo (June 24)
Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Neetu Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Prajakta Koli starrer family drama Jug Jugg Jeeyo will release on June 24.
Ek Villain Returns (July 8)
Ek Villain Returns stars John Abraham, Arjun Kapoor, Disha Patani and Tara Sutaria in lead roles. The film is scheduled for worldwide cinema release on 8 July 2022.
Phone Bhoot (July 15)
Phone Bhoot is a horror-comedy that stars Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan Khatter. It will release on July 15.
Thank God (July 29)
Thank God is a comedy film that stars Ajay Devgn, Sidharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet Singh in the lead roles. The film is scheduled for release on 29 July 2022.
Raksha Bandhan (August 11)
Akshay Kumar’s and Bhumi Pednekar’s family drama Raksha Bandhan will hit screens on August 11. he story written by Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon revolves around the love, bonding and attachment between brother-sister and is directed by Aanand L Rai.
Adipurush (August 11)
Adipurush is a Hindu mythological film based on the epic Ramayana. The film is directed by Om Raut and stars Prabhas, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh and Saif Ali Khan. The film will release on August 11.
Liger (August 25)
Vijay Deverakonda will make his big Bollywood debut with Liger. The film will see him play the role of a boxer. It also stars Ananya Panday and has Mike Tyson in a pivotal role. The film is scheduled to release on August 25.
Brahmastra (September 9)
Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s Brahmastra: Part One Shiva will finally release on September 9. The sci-fi film is directed by Ayan Mukerji and will release on September 9.
Tejas (October 5)
Kangana Ranaut will don the uniform of an Indian Air Force fighter pilot in Tejas. The film takes inspiration from the landmark event in the history of Indian Air Force, which became the country’s first defence force to induct women into combat roles in 2016. It is slated to release on October 5.
Mr and Mrs Mahi (October 7)
Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao are reuniting for Mr and Mrs Mahi. The film is directed by Sharan Sharma and will release on October 7.
Shehzada (November 4)
Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon will reunite for Shehzada. The film is directed by Rohit Dhawan and is slated to release on November 4.
Yodha (November 11)
Sidharth Malhotra, Disha Patani and Raashii Khanna will set the screen on fire with Yodha that is scheduled to release on November 11.
Bhediya (November 25)
Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon will bring a supernatural horror comedy Bhediya to screens on November 25.
Pippa (December 9)
Ishaan Khatter is all set to play war veteran Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta in Pippa that is based on the 1971-Indo-Pak war. The Battle of Garibpur marked India's military victory over Pakistan in 1971 that will be depicted in the film. Pippa is slated to release on December 9.
Ganapath (December 23)
Tiger Shroff will once again don his beloved action avatar with Ganapath. The film also sees Kriti Sanon reunite with him after their debut film together in an equally action-oriented role. Ganapath will release on December 23.
Merry Christmas (December 23)
Vijay Sethupathi and Katrina Kaif will pair up in Sriram Raghavan’s Merry Christmas that is slated for a December 23 release. Katrina recently joined the sets of the film after tying the knot with Vicky Kaushal.
Films waiting for their release date
Jersey
Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur starrer Jersey was supposed to release on December 31, 2021, but owing to the increase in Covid-19 cases, the film’s release date has been postponed. The makers announced the delay in release with a statement but have not divulged the new release date of the film.
Ram Setu (Diwali 2022)
Akshay Kumar, Nushrratt Bharuchcha, Jacqueline Fernandez and Satyadev Kancharana starrer Ram Setu has set its release date as Diwali 2022 but has not yet announced the exact date. The film is directed by Abhishek Sharma.
Cirkus
Ranveer Singh’s and Rohit Shetty’s film Cirkus is one of the most anticipated films of the year but has not announced its release date yet. The film also stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Pooja Hegde.
Gadar 2
Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reunite after 20 years for the sequel to their 2001 magnum opus Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. The film is directed by Anil Sharma and will be released sometime this year.
Goodbye
Goodbye stars Rashmika Mandanna, Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta in lead roles. It is directed by Vikas Bahl and marks the Bollywood debut of TV actor Shivin Narang. No release date has been announced for the film yet.
Vidya Balan-Pratik Gandhi's untitled romantic comedy
Vidya Balan, Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D’cruz and Sendhil Ramamurthy starrer untitled-film is a progressive, uninhibited take on modern relationships and marks Applause Entertainment’s foray into the big screen experience and this second collaboration with Ellipsis Entertainment promises to be 2022’s ultimate date movie. The film is directed by ad genius Shirsha Guha Thakurta.
The Rapist
Konkona Sen, Arjun Rampal and Tanmay Dhanania starrer The Rapist is a deeply affecting drama on the aftermath of a violent crime, The Rapist has been acclaimed as “One of Aparna Sen’s finest works” by Variety Magazine. The film won the prestigious Kim Jiseok award at the 26th Busan International Film Festival. The film looks beyond the obvious crime, to explore not only how it affects the survivors and perpetrators of the crime but also delves into how one’s idealistic views are drastically altered when the truth hits uncomfortably close to home.
Monica O My Darling (OTT)
Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi, Radhika Apte star in this thriller film that will have a digital release on Netflix. No release date has been announced yet by the streaming giant.
Looop Lapeta (OTT)
Looop Lapeta is the official Hindi remake of the 1998 German cult classic Run Lola Run. Directed by Aakash Bhatia the film features Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin in lead roles. The film’s release date is not out yet but the film will have a digital release on Netflix.
Lost
he Yami Gautam starrer LOST completed shoot in August 2021 and has been under the media scanner for all the right reasons!
