Story

'Emergency' brings forth the period of 1975 to 1977, which is considered as the darkest chapter in the history of Indian independence. It depicts the life and politics of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as well as the political situation of that time.

Performances

Kangana, this time, has crossed the limits of her art. She is Indira Gandhi like even Indira Gandhi could not have been. The casting deserves special mention. Anupam Kher leaves a deep impression in the role of Jayaprakash Narayan, while Shreyas Talpade is brilliant as Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Mahima Chaudhary plays cultural activist and writer Pupul Jayakar, Vishal Nair plays Sanjay Gandhi and Satish Kaushik plays Babu Jagjivan Ram. The wonderful partnership of all these actors makes this film a delightful experience.

Direction

Kangana has worn this hat so comfortably, that the direction can simply be described as commendable. Every aspect of the film has been put together with precision. The screenplay is also beautifully and impressively written. Some camera angles are jarring but the story is so engaging and interesting that you overlook these minor irritants.

Music

Jayaprakash Narayan's famous slogan ‘Singhasan Khali Karo’ is presented as a song in ‘Emergency’, which creates revolutionary fervor. Though the rest of the songs and music could have been presented in a more impressive way, they still have their own importance in the story and are impressionable.

Dialogues

The dialogues are impressive and deep. The declaration of Emergency and many other emotional monologues give a strong direction to the film.

Overall

If you are a fan of political dramas and historical films, 'Emergency' is a must watch. It highlights an important and sensitive aspect of Indian history and is entertaining as well.
