If today our daughters, mothers, and the women in our homes are able to receive an education, it's because Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule laid the foundation for it 125 years ago — a story this film brings to light. ‘Phule’ may not have the typical elements of today’s commercial cinema, but it carries the true soul of storytelling, which deserves to be felt. As the film rightly says, 'In our country, it is easiest to divide people in the name of religion, which is why education is so important.'
Story
'Phule' is based on the true and inspiring story of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and his wife Savitribaii. At a time when social evils like child marriage, untouchability and exploitation of widows were prevalent, Jyotiba Phule first educated his wife and then took the bold step of educating the girls of society. He did this despite strong opposition from society 125 years ago. This is the story that 'Phule' brings alive on the big screen.
Acting
Pratik Gandhi has played Jyotiba Phule with complete truth and depth. This is perhaps one of the most impressive performances of his career. He has played every emotion with such simplicity and seriousness that you connect with his character. Patralekha has brought life to the character of Savitribai, although there are some scenes where her acting seems a bit dull, but her presence, body language and expressions bring the character to life. Especially the scene when she is threatened and she responds with courage is really heart touching. Akshaya Gurav's work in the character of Fatima is also excellent and she has left her mark.
Direction
Anant Mahadevan's direction is balanced. He has presented the film with seriousness and the subject does not seem cumbersome anywhere. However, at some places the coordination between the background score and the scenes is weak, due to which the impact of some dialogues is reduced. Still, the balance and sensitivity with which he has made the film is commendable. He has succeeded in making the film informative but some scenes looked staged.
Dialogues
The dialogues in ‘Phule’ will leave a lasting impact on your heart and mind. When Jyotirao Phule says, “You know I have a dream… ek aisa samaaj ho jaha koi pradhaan nahi, sab samaan ho,” it reflects his deep vision of an equal society. Another powerful moment is when he declares, “Angrezo ki gulaami toh sirf sau saal purani hai… ab iss gulaami se logon ko swatantra karna chahta hoon jo 3,000 saal purani hai.”
Music
The music of the film gives more depth to its soul. ‘Dhun Lagi’ is the most effective song which not only takes the story forward but also touches the hearts of the audience. The music composer duo of Rohan Pradhan and Rohan Gokhale has given the film an emotional and musical touch.
Overall
‘Phule’ is a film which is needed today. It does not have spicy entertainment but it has truth, sensitivity and the soul of cinema. This film proves that good cinema is still alive and necessary.
