Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, theatrical films had to take the digital route and premiered on major OTT platforms in 2020. While most of them failed to grab attention, Suriya's Tamil-language film, Soorarai Pottru, soared high. The Sudha Kongara directorial was appreciated by the critics and audience alike. Adding another feather in its cap, Soorarai Pottru has entered the Oscars race. It has joined the race under the General Category for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score and other categories.
The co-producer of Soorarai Pottru, Rajsekar Pandian, made the announcement by tweeting, "Happy Republic Day! #SooraraiPottru joins OSCARS under General Category in Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Score & other categories! The film has been made available in the Academy Screening Room today."

Soorarai Pottru skipped a theatrical release and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 12, 2020. Co-starring Aparna Balamurali, Soorarai Pottru is based on the life of Captain Gopinath. The film will also be screened at the Golden Globe Awards 2021. The 93rd Academy Awards was scheduled to take place on February 28 but it has been postponed to April 25.
