Renowned Kannada actress, Jayanthi, breathed her last in her sleep today in Bengaluru. Known as Abhinaya Sharadhe, Jayanthi, 76, was a prominent member of the Kannada film industry from 1960 to the late 80s and featured in over 500 films. She was keeping unwell for quite some time, her son Krishna Kumar confirmed to a daily.
Soon after the news of Jayanthi's demise broke, Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa offered condolence. He tweeted in Kannada, "I am extremely pained on the news of 'Abhinaya Sharadhe' Jayanthi's demise. Her contribution to the Kannada film industry was immense and the void she left can't be filled. May her soul rest in peace. May God give her family and fan base the power to overcome this loss."

Jayanthi, a dancer, started her acting career in 1963 with the Kannada film Jenu Goodu. She did over 500 films including Kalaavati, Miss Leelavathi, Thulasi, Banashankari and Anand among others. She worked with late actor Rajkumar in over 30 films.
Apart from Kannada films, she also did many Tamil and Telugu films. Some of her best Tamil films are Karnan, Neerkumizhi, Ethir Neechal, Iru Kodugal and Devadhai among others.
