Early in her career, Kriti Sanon ditched conventional Bollywood masala films and chose to do something different and refreshing. The otherwise svelte Kriti gained weight to justify her role in Laxman Utekar's Mimi and challenged herself physically and mentally too. In short, Kriti got into the skin of the character perfectly and the hard work paid off. Made with labour of love, Mimi highlighted the struggle of a young Rajasthani dancer who is chosen to be a surrogate mother at the request of an American couple. However, the character's life is nothing less than a roller coaster ride.
Mimi skipped a theatrical release and released globally on Jio Cinema and Netflix on July 26. The surrogacy drama laced with humour and emotions was appreciated by critics and the audience alike. Hailed as one of 2021's best films to release on OTT, Mimi reiterated the fact that Kriti can pull off any role. Now, as the film continues to enthral people, rumours are rife that it will be remade in Tamil and Telugu too. Reportedly, Keerthy Suresh has been approached to step into Kriti's shoes for the bilingual film.

Interestingly, Mimi was the Hindi remake of the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy! starring Urmila Kanitkar in the lead role.
