On Monday, Dhanush announced separation from his wife Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth after 18 years of togetherness. They had tied the knot on November 18, 2004. Dhanush is a renowned actor, singer and producer whereas Aishwaryaa, the elder daughter of superstar Rajinikanth, is a director and singer.
In his statement, Dhanush wrote, "18 years of togetherness as friends, couple, as parents and well wishers to each other. The journey has been of growth, understanding, adjusting and adapting... Today we stand at a place where our paths separate... Aishwaryaa and I have decided to part ways as a couple and take time to understand us as individuals for the better. Please do Respect our decision and give us the needed privacy to deal with this. Om Namashivaaya! Spread love, D."

Sharing the statement on her Instagram handle, Aishwaryaa wrote, "No caption needed…only your understanding n your love necessary!"
In an interview in 2013, Aishwaryaa spoke about her love story with Dhanush. According to the interview, she met him for the first time at Albert Theatre, where she went to watch his film Kadhal Konden. Aishwaryaa was introduced to Dhanush as superstar Rajnikanth’s daughter. They grew closer after she sent flowers to him along with a note appreciating his performance. The actor called her up to express his gratitude. Within six months, they got married.
Aishwaryaa made her directorial debut with 3 starring Dhanush and Shruti Haasan in 2012. The popular song Why This Kolaveri Di belonged to this film.
Dhanush and Aishwaryaa are parents to two boys, Yatra Raja and Linga Raja.
