Did Nayanthara & Vignesh Shivan violate Indian surrogacy rules with birth of twin baby boys? Tamil Nadu health minister calls for inquiry

Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan announced the birth of their twin baby boys on Sunday. They reportedly welcomed their sons through surrogacy. While netizens are delighted with the news, the announcement is now brewing a new controversy. Nayanthara and Vignesh are at the receiving end as questions are being raised over whether they followed the Indian surrogacy laws.

After the announcement, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian, at a press conference on Monday, said that an inquiry will be conducted. "The surrogacy itself is subjected to a lot of debates. But, the law allows individuals to involve in surrogacy if they are above 21 years and below 36 years of age, with the approval of the family," he said. Nayanthara and Vignesh are yet to react to this.

For the unversed, commercial surrogacy is banned in India since January this year. Reports suggest that Nayanthara and Vignesh started the surrogacy procedure before December 2021 when it was allowed. The Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021, only allowing for altruistic surrogacy, was passed in December 2021 and came into effect on January 25, 2022. As per the new rules, the surrogate should be married at least once and should have their own child. While commercial surrogacy is prohibited, there will only be altruistic surrogacy, wherein except for the medical expenses and the insurance cover of the surrogate, no other charges or expenses are covered by the intending parents.

On Sunday, Vignesh shared some beautiful pictures with the babies and Nayanthara on Instagram. Announcing their twin baby boys' arrival, he wrote, "Nayan & Me have become Amma & Appa. We are blessed with twin baby boys. All Our prayers, and our ancestors’ blessings combined wit all the good manifestations made, have come 2gethr in the form Of 2 blessed babies for us. Need all ur blessings for our Uyir & Ulagam. Life looks brighter & more beautiful. God is double great (sic)."

In the past, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar and Shilpa Shetty were among the celebrities who opted for surrogacy. Recently, Priyanka Chopra Jonas welcomed a baby girl with Nick Jonas through the procedure.

Nayanthara and Vignesh had an intimate, close-knit wedding ceremony in Mahabalipuram on June 9.
