Amitabh Bachchan proudly reveals his Sikh heritage: ‘My aunts called me Amitabh Singh’

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan recently opened up about his thoughts on "inter-caste" marriages during a conversation with a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati season 16. The 81-year-old actor expressed discomfort with the term while discussing his family background. Speaking with contestant Kriti, who mentioned her love marriage across caste lines, Bachchan said, "It is awkward to say 'inter-caste' marriage."

The veteran actor recalled his parents' union as an example. His father, renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was from Uttar Pradesh, while his mother, Teji Bachchan, hailed from a Sikh family. Amitabh noted that his father never believed in caste distinctions. "He never kept his surname; he used a pen name. Bachchan is a pen name," the actor shared.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Bachchan added that his father faced opposition to his marriage, with maternal relatives affectionately referring to him as "Amitabh Singh" due to his Sikh heritage. "When I was born, my masis (maternal aunts) would say, ‘Kinna sona putar hai, sadda Amitabh Singh (What a beautiful son, our Amitabh Singh),'" he reminisced.

Harivansh Rai Bachchan, part of the Nayi Kavita movement, was a celebrated literary figure best known for his iconic poem Madhushala. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976. Teji Bachchan, a social activist, met Harivansh at a college event, later starring in his adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth as Lady Macbeth.

Amitabh also touched upon his marriage to actor Jaya Bhaduri (now Bachchan), noting that they, too, faced challenges because of their different backgrounds. Jaya, a Bengali Brahmin, married Amitabh despite objections from a Bengali priest at their wedding, who was against the union of a Bengali Brahmin and a non-Brahmin. The couple tied the knot on June 3, 1973, and are parents to Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan.

During the same episode of KBC 16, the iconic actor shared a lighter moment, admitting his dislike for mathematics in school. He revealed that he once scored only 42 marks in a maths exam, drawing laughter from the audience.

Amitabh Bachchan continues to charm audiences with his candid revelations and wit, making Kaun Banega Crorepati a platform for both personal reflections and entertainment.
