So Ekta Kapoor is supposedly set to launch her own version of the super hit series Game of Thrones. We’re not surprised – we’re just wondering why she took this long to get started!
Canny TV queen Ekta has been known to pick up on the pulse and incorporate hit elements of popular shows in her own serials. Acknowledged as the pioneer of the saas-bahu trend on the small screen, Ekta is clearly moving with the times. Ekta’s series is pegged to have the look and feel of the medieval drama but will not be an official adaptation of the super successful American series. Buzz goes that it will have generous lashings of sex and violence though, in keeping with the original.

Planned as a web series, it is expected to roll by the end of May itself. However, her attempt to cash in on the worldwide popularity of the fantasy drama television series Game of Thrones is not exactly being looked at very positively. Given Ekta’s brand of television, there are naturally doubts about whether she will be able to bring a similar grandeur, epic scale and impeccable performances to her version of GoT.
Incidentally, in 2016 Ekta had lashed out at TV’s content being dubbed regressive. She had declared that television writers should be applauded for the unique storylines and content that they are writing. “TV has become for the masses. Why don't we call Game of Thrones regressive? It is the same thing - you watch a woman give birth to dragons there, you have a red woman killing, a red wedding. I think we (in India) write some great stories. When I had been to America and met an American TV producer, I was told that she was actually amazed at the kind of writing that we do here!”
Our imagination is soaring already wondering what TV’s czarina has in store for us, as she attempts to bring GoT’s themes of power, betrayal, family, society and class, justice and judgment to the Indian screen.
Sinhasan ka Khel, anyone?
