‘The Half of It’ Trailer: Alice Wu’s love triangle with an LGBTQ twist ft. Leah Lewis and Daniel Diemer is the love story you need in these testing times

At a time when the world can do with a little more love, Netflix has roped in Alice Wu to come with an original film that you surely won’t want to miss. The Half of It is a teen love story whose heartwarming trailer was dropped yesterday follows a bookish high school student named Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) who makes money on the side ghostwriting essays and papers for her fellow students so that she could help her single father meet the needs. However, her life takes a turn when a sweet yet inarticulate jock (Daniel Diemer) hires her to write letters to a popular girl Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire), Ellie discovers she had feelings for Aster as well.

Ellie and Paul develop a deep, unlikely friendship that neither anticipated giving rise to a complicated and surprising love triangle. The story seems to be inspired by the classic Cyrano de Bergerac but Wu has given her own LGBTQ twist to it. The trailer is immensely enjoyable and this actually promises to be a real film with relatable emotions, good camera work and a storyline that seems plausible. The characters do not look sticking to stereotypes and seem to have complex characters underneath. The trailer promises that Half of It will be a good film.

The Half Of It is a coming-of-age dramedy but has the tenderness, sweetness and subtle nuance that has been missing in the last few Netflix releases. The film successfully portrays a commentary on class, race, religion, gender and contrasting and confusing teenage preferences that are rarely seen in the YA genre.

The Half Of It is scheduled to release on Netflix on May 1. Watch the trailer below:
