HBO Max shelves Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira’s series adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s ‘Americanah’

Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira’s series adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah has been scrapped and is no longer moving ahead as planned at HBO Max. The series was shelved after Lupita was forced to exit due to scheduling conflicts.

As reported by an online portal, Americanah was originally meant to start shooting earlier this year, but the pandemic pushed its production dates back which resulted in Lupita bowing out of the series as it conflicted with other projects on her schedule.

The show was supposed to be a 10-episode straight-to-series order at HBO Max and Lupita and Gurira were to serve as executive producers. Gurira was also supposed to write and serve as showrunner. The series was also supposed to star Uzo Aduba, Corey Hawkins, Zackary Momoh, and Tireni Oyenusi. It was a long time passion project of Lupita who wanted to make it into a film but eventually decided to adapt the novel into a series.
