Having a transgender protagonist normalises LGBTQ rights, the idea is to do more than just entertain: Akshay Kumar on 'Laxmii'

Ever since Akshay Kumar's comedy-horror Laxmii was announced, the excitement among cine enthusiasts and fans of the actor shot high. The official Hindi remake of the Tamil blockbuster KanchanaLaxmii is directed by Raghava Lawrence who starred and helmed the original four-film franchise. The film also stars Kiara Advani as the female lead.  The film released on November 9 on Dinsey + Hotstar and opened to mixed reviews and audience reaction. However, in just a day of its release, Laxmii became the biggest opening of Disney + Hotstar and received the highest viewership.

Now, talking about the film's buzz, Akshay said, "I feel great. I know a lot of critics don't like my films, and I understand it. But my focus is on my audience. I am told it's the biggest opening of my career. The film achieves something pivotal. Having a transgender protagonist normalises and reinforces the rights of the LGBTQ community. Be it with PadMan [2018] or Toilet: Ek Prem Katha [2017] or Mission Mangal [2019], the idea is to do more than just entertain or deliver a box-office success. I want to make a difference."

Talking about transgender activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, who has lent support to the horror-comedy ever since it was announced, Akshay said, "Her words of appreciation mattered to me. She lauded me for playing the character. There were 100 transgender women. They all stood up and clapped at the end of the film. The ostracisation of the community has been horrific, and it's time we collectively stood up and promoted equality."

Supporting cinemas and exhibitors, Akshay further said, "Theatre is the mother of all media. It will always be the foremost priority for content creators in India. I have explored television, I am starting an OTT project, but the charm of cinemas will always remain."
