HBO has revealed that the straight-to-series Game of Thrones prequel House of Dragon is finally under construction. The prequel from author George RR Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik is now officially in production and will launch in 2022 on HBO Max.
The Game of Thrones’ official social media handle and HBO unveiled the news with a picture of the cast at a socially distanced tabled read. The GOT account captioned the handle, “Fire will reign The @HBO original series #HouseoftheDragon is officially in production. Follow @HouseoftheDragonHBO for all updates.”

The prequel series stars Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Fabien Frankel, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno. As per reports, House of Dragon is based on Martin’s Fire & Blood and is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House of Targaryen. Considine is slated to play King Viserys Targaryen, Cooke as Alicent Hightower, D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen. Toussaint will essay the role of Lord Corlys Velaryon aka the Sea Snake, who becomes Hand to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen during the Dance of the Dragons.
Miguel Sapochnik will direct the pilot and additional episodes and will also serve as co-showrunner alongside Ryan Condal. House of Dragon was co-created by Martin and Condal and the pilot script written by the latter. Writers Sara Lee Hess, Vince Gerardis and Ron Schmidt executive produce the series alongside Martin, Condal and Sapochnik as well as Greg Yaitanes. Yaitanes, Clare Kilner and Geeta V Patel will be at the helm directing the 10-episode series.
