Jenna Ortega has been roped in to play the titular role in Wednesday, Time Burton’s live-action Addams Family series for Netflix that focuses on the iconic character of Wednesday Addams. The coming-of-age comedy is written by Al Gough and Miles Millar and is based on the character created by cartoonist Charles Addams.
Jenna took to social media to share the news along with a poster of the show. She captioned the images as, “New chapter. Hope I can do Wednesday Addams justice. *snaps twice*.” Jenna takes over the role from Christina Ricci, who played the role of Wednesday in both feature films, The Addams Family in 1991 and sequel Addams Family Values in 1993.
Burton’s supernatural-mystery series sees Wednesday as a student at Nevermore Academy where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, put a stop to a monstrous killing spree that has the local town in terror and solve the supernatural mystery surrounding her parents 25 years ago, all while she herself comes of age and untangles her convoluted relationships.
The show marks Burton’s first live-action show and his digital directorial debut. Besides directing, he also executive produces the show with Gough and Millar, who will serve as showrunners on the series. Wednesday is produced by MGM Television, which controls the underlying rights to the IP.
