The first trailer of Oscar Issac’s and Jessica Chastain’s HBO’s limited series Scenes From a Marriage has been dropped. The highly-anticipated remake sees the lead star cast as husband and wife grappling with issues in their marriage and with complexities of love, longing and expectations in a marital relationship. The trailer also confirmed the series’ debut on HBO and HBO Max on September 12.
The original 1973 miniseries was written and directed by legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. The series transports the original to modern day America. Chastain and Issac play the roles first embodied by Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson, respectively, who played an affluent married couple whose marriage is charted across a decade, from their relationship’s demise to reconciliation and back. The original series was based on Bergman’s own relationship with muse and partner Liv Ullmann, to whom he was married from 1965 to 1970.

The trailer gives the audience a fairly clear picture of the premise of a young couple falling in love, getting married, having kids and eventually drifting apart. It is unclear as to what pulls them apart but there is hope of reconciliation. Chastain’s and Issac’s series is co-created, written and directed by Hagai Levi.
Chastain takes over from Michelle Williams, who had to exit the series as a result of scheduling conflicts. Chastain and Isaac will also executive produce in addition to starring in the series.
