Anushka Sharma took a break from films after Zero in 2018. Though the actress was not actively choosing acting projects, she was busy producing content for the OTT under her production banner Clean Slate Filmz along with her brother Karnesh Sharma. In 2021, Anushka welcomed a baby girl named Vamika with Virat Kohli. Now, ahead of her daughter's 1st birthday, the actress announced her next film.
Anushka, putting an end to all speculations, confirmed signing former captain of India national women's cricket team Jhulan Goswami's biopic. Titled Chakda Xpress, the Netflix film promises to "be an eye-opener into the world of women’s cricket." The first look teaser of the biopic was shared by Anushka on Instagram. She penned an elaborate note that read, "It is a really special film because it is essentially a story of tremendous sacrifice. Chakda Xpress is inspired by the life and times of former Indian captain Jhulan Goswami and it will be an eye-opener into the world of women’s cricket. At a time when Jhulan decided to become a cricketer and make her country proud on the global stage, it was very tough for women to even think of playing the sport. This film is a dramatic retelling of several instances that shaped her life and also women’s cricket."
Reportedly, Anushka shot for the teaser in January 2020 at the Eden Gardens stadium. In the teaser, Anushka masterfully stepped into the shoes and jersey of the cricketer, who is known as Chakda Express as she hails from the small village in West Bengal. The actress talks with a Bengali accent in the teaser.
Chakda Xpress is directed by Prosit Roy, who made his directorial debut with Anushka's Pari. The actress also produced the supernatural film. He also directed Amazon Prime Video's blockbuster web series Paatal Lok with Avinash Arun. Again, the show was bankrolled by Anushka's production house.
