After making vampires, werewolves, rock bands, superheroes and even Nazis funny, Taika Waititi is back with making swashbuckling and fearsome pirates loveable, gentlemanly and considerate in HBO Max’s new show Our Flag Means Death. The series is created and showrun by David Jenkins but Waititi is serving as an executive producer as well as the director of the pilot.

Our Flag Means Death stars Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, a pampered aristocrat who abandons his life of privilege to become a pirate. The series is loosely based on Bonnet’s true adventures and also stars Waititi as Blackbeard, history’s most feared and revered pirate. The trailer shows a comedic take on the life of Bonnet who trades in his comfortable life to lead a gang of pirates to fulfil his lifelong dream. He can be seen giving rousing speeches to his fellow shipmen who are a crew of misfits just like him but must look intimidating as an enemy ship approaches. However, as fate would have it, he eventually pairs up with world’s most famous swashbuckler, Blackbeard (Waititi), to take on the seas together.
