Citadel is a global show, Indian and Italian versions are going to live within the same spy universe: Russo Brothers

The excitement around Prime Video’s first-to-launch series in the global spyverse, Citadel by Russo Brothers has been at its peak. After Avengers: Endgame and co-producing ‘one of the most awarded films of all time’ (Everything Everywhere All At Once), executive producers Joe and Anthony Russo recently attended the world premiere of Citadel in London and were spotted on the blue carpet to present the global spy-verse series to the world. Citadel is the next big step for content, from Amazon Studios and Russo Brothers’ AGBO, as they envision and create an entire spyverse that spans all over the globe.

Talking about the world that they create with Citadel, Joe Russo of the Russo Brothers shared, "It is a spy agency that we started decades ago and, intended to be independent of any nation so it can't be influenced by politics. And, its mission is to fight for the greater good for humanity." He further added, "This show was five years in the making."

Joe also shared, “This is a globe-spanning show and, it was our mission to bring as much scale to it as possible and hence, our journey around the world to collect footage and the imagery for the show." Marking the beginning of the thrilling spy universe, agents from across the franchise joined in for the London premiere that included Varun Dhawan, Samantha Ruth Prabhu along with the writers and creators Raj & DK, and co-writer Sita Menon from the Indian installment of Citadel, along with the lead, Matilda De Angelis and, Gina Gardini, executive producer and showrunner from the Italian installment.

Anthony also shared, "The idea that Citadel is a global agency, is really at the heart of what the show is because Citadel is a global show. It's not only this first generation that is being debuted this month on Amazon called Citadel, the English language version, but we also have versions being developed in Italy, right now in Italian. We have a version being developed in India, as well and these are all going to live within the same narrative universe, the same spy universe. We are very excited about this."

Telling us more in the video from the blue carpet about Citadel, Joe further added, "It's a fresh story. The audience has no idea what's coming. We can surprise them at every turn and this is a show that is filled with surprises, nothing is what you expect. It's like an onion as you peel it back, and twists and twists on you. So, don't think you've got it figured out too early."

"We love the spy genre and you know, this was our opportunity as producers to help reinvent what that could be...bring a fresh version of it to the audiences and the way we look to do that is through our characters," expressed Anthony.

Created by Russo Brothers’ AGBO and showrunner David Weil, the 6-episode series features Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Stanley Tucci, and Lesley Manville in pivotal roles, with two episodes dropping on April 28 and one episode launching weekly through May 26. The global series will stream across 240 countries and territories in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and other international languages.
